Well the vaporware that is 9 Ball The Movie apparently once again scraped together enough nickels to shoot some more scenes. They’ll be shooting at APA Team Nationals (again), which should be interesting since their star is currently playing in Turning Stone. Naturally, the director Tony Palma is once again claiming the movie is near completion, as he told the Orange County Register that “he expected the film to open in theaters by the end of the year or in early 2011″.

As we all know, this movie is the billiards industry’s equivalent to Duke Nukem Forever. Its been in production forever and at this point I doubt anyone actually believes it will ever come out (Duke on the other hand was finally killed after 10 years of build). Do we all recall back in 2007 (yes, 3 years ago), when the production company was “preselling” the DVD for 2 bucks (they were too lazy to pull this page off their website, but at least they listed the offer as expiring in May 2008):

To give you an idea as to how long this project has been in the works, I saw a copy of the script back in 2005. The company still lists their “letter of support” from Stephen Ducoff (dated January 2006), who the BCA kicked to the curb in Feb. 2006. The movie has changed lead cast members more times than tires get changed at the Brickyard (anyone else recall Jennifer Layne Park as Black Diamond aka “Gail’s Nightmare”) and based on the “teaser” clip, it appears they have reworked the script to be a J-Thug/APA infomercial.

Seriously, the fact that this clown is telling people that the flick is going to have a theatrical run by the end of the year is just pathetic. This guy has been claiming the movie is “near completion” for G-d only knows how long. I mean take a look at this screenshot from this 2 post blog that it appears the production company created. You’ll notice that they list the release date there as “Summer 2010″.

And of course who can forget when the guy allegedly sent out emails to people stating that the movie would be released on DVD during the holidays of 2007.

Seriously, I’m pretty sure that this will be my last post about this train wreck, as I would prefer to not become this guy:

In the meantime, here’s the trailer for the movie that was released, um, well, a year ago. I’m sure it will be hitting theaters any time now.

Maybe I should head up to Vegas this weekend, go to the top of the Riv and see if I can score a spot as an extra. Nah. They’re probably looking for people to pay for walk on roles anyway and the catering table will probably be a jug of water and a trough of pickled eggs.

So apparently there’s an honest to G-d actual WPBA event happening this weekend. After a 3 month layoff, the WPBA is heading to Norman, OK for the US Open. As has become standard for the WPBA, there has been zero chatter about this event other than a fairly boilerplate press release that went out a few days ago.

I find this very interesting. Traditionally, there are two “major” events on the WPBA docket – The US Open and the Tour Championships. This year, there apparently will not be a Tour Championship (as there still isn’t one on the schedule) and the US Open is by all accounts struggling to fill their field. I’m naturally pumped to hear that some of my 1.0 hotties got the invites (Niki Rasmussen and Ashley Nandrasy), but I’ll be very curious to see who doesn’t show.

Good news/bad news for anyone interested in watching the matches. The good news is that they’ll be taping from the quarters for ESPN. The bad news is that there won’t be a stream. That means fans will be reliant on the WPBA updating the brackets (assuming they post the brackets) to see how their favorites are doing. If there are brackets, I’ll break them down on Wednesday night.

To be clear, this is a bit of a watershed moment for the WPBA. They’re probably not going to fill the number of TV hours required in their ESPN contract, they’re about to lose their biggest draw in J-Thuggery as she’s close to being ready to pop and by all accounts they are having a really tough time getting a full field for what should be the biggest event of the year. We shall see if the WPBA is able to steer itself away from the cliff.

I don’t want to sound like a complete dickhole, but I must be a completely short bussed, because I just don’t get it. Seriously, someone explain this to me. A couple weeks ago, there was a significant mainstream event for pool. It took place in NYC and was attended by a ton of velvet rope athletes as well as lots of pro pool players. And the industry coverage on this? Nada. Let me give you a brief rundown of some of the beautiful people that showed:
Athletes
Eli Manning (NY Giants)
Ryan Grant (Packers)
Justin Tuck (NY Giants)
Hakeem Nicks (NY Giants)
Carlos Boozer (Utah Jazz)

Pool Players
Jeanette Lee
Jennifer Barretta
Sarah Rousey
Caroline Pao
Tony Robles/Gail Glazebrook

I saw pictures of the JBar with Justin Tuck, Rousey with a bunch of peeps and you know that JThug took pictures with every single celeb at the event, not to mention the fact that she was giving tips to the celebs and was the only pool player to get the Getty red carpet pics. You don’t believe me? Here’s a picture of Sarah Rousey with Carlos Freaking Boozer, one of the best ballers in the NBA.

(Photo Props to franksdawghouse.com)

Now I did some searching and the only mentions of this that I could find were in a couple of press releases and a write up on a gag blog (no offense, natch, especially since I swiped the picture from there). After reading some the Pool Synergy write-ups, one of the big themes seemed to be getting mainstream coverage. Well, this was about as mainstream as its gonna get (not to mention it was for charity) and it got zero industry coverage (although it did get some play in the MSM). I mean seriously, you’ve got a bunch of guys that are cheered on by millions playing pool in NYC. You’ve got pool players who so desperately want to be accepted as athletes rubbing elbows with some huge names from the NFL and NBA. It doesn’t get much more mainstream than that.

I decided to spin some tunage today since I’m unplugged this weekend and this seemed somehow apropos.

Meh. Whatev. Out.
