I Just Don’t Get It

So yesterday there was an outpouring of well wishes for Tarjit “Tony” Chohan, as he’s headed to prison.  For those not familiar with the story, here are the basics.  Tony Chohan, known by many in the industry as a very talented pool player, was arrested back in March for trying to sell some dope to an undercover cop.

Now here’s the thing.  We’re not talking about Jay & Silent Bob selling dimebags in front of the Quik Stop.  What we’re talking about is 61 pounds (yes pounds) of marijuana, 1 pound of cocaine and some ecstasy.  This is bad, yet people seem to focus on the point that he has to go to jail a few days before Christmas.  Based on the booking report, it looks like he pled to the one charge of felony corruption in order to get the rest dropped.  Rumor has it that he’ll be doing time for 7 years in the state pen.

Now I don’t know the guy and it should be noted that he has a clean record prior to the March bust, so I’m not going to say anything about him, his character or what he’s like as a person.  He did break the law though, so it isn’t like he’s being sent to jail on a trumped up charge or getting framed.  When you get caught trying to sell $200,000 worth of drugs to an undercover cop, you go to jail.  Maybe someone with more knowledge on the case can enlighten me as to why anyone should feel bad for Mr. Chohan, because I really don’t get it.

As far as I can tell, selling drugs is a risk/reward type of venture.  When you go about dealing drugs, you know there’s a decent chance you’ll be caught.  In exchange for the risk of going to jail, you break the law to make a bunch of money.  Why anyone would bemoan it is beyond me.  Do I feel bad for his family?  Of course I do.  I can’t see any reason to feel bad for the man himself though.

  1. [...] Clearly, they haven’t see any of those meth commercials.  If they had, I’m sure they would’ve chosen something far more innocuous. [...]

I knew Tony when he was in his teens and dropped out of high school in Sactown. He and his cousin were typical rebellious teens with nothing much to do, in what use to be a cow-town. Its sad to see this happen. I can imagine his prideful parents, and other family members, if they are aware of this, are absolutely devastated especially since in their culture (East Indian), family pride means absolutely everything. But, there’s a black sheep in every family. Unfortunately, Tony proved to be it. As the saying goes… do the crime… do the time.
