Monica Webb Wins the 2009 WPBA San Diego Classic
Well folks, the first event of the 2009 WPBA season is in the books and your winner is Monica Webb. Everyone in the WPBA better be taking notice, because Monica has now taken two straight titles dating back to last season’s championships. Monica took down Ga Young Kim 7-5 after running through Jeanette Lee 7-1 to make it to the finals.
With the first event in the books, the rankings get a massive reshuffling. I don’t know how the WPBA rankings will shake out (actually, I do, but I’ll wait until they make it official), but I do have the new PCN Division I Rankings (which I’ll be posting sometime tomorrow).
On another note though, I have a gripe. There were a handful of players who were no-shows to this event. Anna Kostanian and Megan Minerich skipped it because they couldn’t get the time off work. Bonnie Plowman skipped it even though she’s the OB Cues Tour representative (somewhat by default, since Lisa Marr declined, Heather Pulford (Lloyd) was already exempt and Amanda Lampert wasn’t interested).
I get the fact that the WPBA payouts blow. They’re so bad that Jennifer Barretta was joking on the mic wondering if her winnings would even cover her plane fare. If you don’t finish in the Top 16, you’re getting chump change for your troubles. Even so, there are tons of players who would kill for a shot to play in the big leagues.
Look, I don’t know why Plowman noshowed the event, but maybe the OB Cues tour should reconsider who they have representing them. It strikes me that Cristina De La Garza or Orietta Strickland would make a much better representative since they clearly want to play and as they showed in San Diego, have the chops to compete.
