WPBA San Diego Classic - Final Results

Allison Fisher wins the WPBA San Diego Classic

The first event of the year is over and the person who’s been #1 in the WPBA for the past 58 years is still #1. In the semis, Allison and Karen put on quite a show with Fisher outlasting Corr 7-6.  In the second semifinal, Gerda Hofstatter overcame a 5-2 and 6-4 deficit to beat Ga Young Kim 7-6.  The semis proved to be much more exciting than the finals, as Fisher defeated Hofstatter 7-4 to take the title.

So here’s the thing.  It was nice to see a new face in the TV rounds, but ultimately the result was the same.  Once again we had a TV match of Allison Fisher and Karen Corr and once again we have Allison Fisher winning a title.  It might be a little more interesting if Allison and Karen had any visible charisma, but when you watch them on TV, its has all the excitement of watching paint dry.  Those who disagree will say things like “but Tiger wins all the time on the PGA tour and everyone loves watching him play”, which is true, but there’s a difference.  Tiger does things no one else can do on the golf course and when he makes a key putt, he pumps his fist and shows emotion.  When he wins a major, you can see the emotion on his face.

Right now, the top players on both the women’s and men’s divisions are robots.  They don’t talk, they don’t smile, they don’t even look interested.  They just sink balls, do the expected “hold trophy over head” pose and leave.  Why should anyone else care about these events if the top players don’t seem to care? Van Boening - Robot.  Fisher - Robot.  Corr - Librarian Robot.

Next up for the WPBA… a special challenge match where Iron Willie sponsored by Predator will take on Dr. Dave’s latest creation.  The winner will get a lifetime supply of Penzoil and a date with Rosie the Robot.
