Nicknames
March 11th, 2008 by poolcuereview

I don’t get it, I really don’t. Do pool players think they’re professional wrestlers? Why must every pool player have a nickname? Do people really call Johnny Archer “The Scorpion”? I know I’ve never seen anyone walk up to Karen Corr and say “Yo Irish Invader! How ’bout a picture.” What about “Little Devil Girl” for Ga Young Kim? I can see it now… some fat guy in overalls sitting in the rafters watching a WPBA event yelling out “Holy sheeeet! There’s Little Devil Girl!”
That isn’t to say that all nicknames are retarded. Jennifer “9mm” Baretta is pretty cute. At least her nickname goes with her last name in a way that makes sense. Now Megan “Magnum” Minerich on the other hand… pretty damn lame. Why not Megan “Montezuma” Minerich or “Malevolent” Megan Minerich or even “Mysterious” Megan Minerich? They all start with the letter M, which seems to be the only reason she chose it. And then there are the ones that truly are a mystery. Julie Kelly = Motor Molly. Earl Strickland = The Pearl. Actually, I get his nickname. Its ironic since the guy displays all the professionalism of a 4 year old, associating him with something dignified and classy like a pearl is quite a funny one.
Everyone should take a lesson from our favorite Austrian. Jasmin Ouschan could have some silly nickname if she wanted. We could all call her “Ice” with that pouty scowl, her cool demeanor at the table and that frozen rope of a break she has. But doing so would belittle her game. Instead, we can just call her Jasmin or Ms. Ouschan. She doesn’t need a nickname… her game and her titles speak for themselves.

LOL … I need a nick name.
William “50/50″ Fuentes, shot great one minute and shot like doodoo the next. He won his first match 8 to 4 and then lost his second 5 to 10.

You are an asshole. Get a hobby.

Can’t disagree with you on that one. I do have a hobby though, I thought that was pretty apparent.

that may have come off a little harsh. but your blog really was dumb. the nicknames are tongue in cheek. lighten up. it sucks when you don’t have a nickname and then all of a sudden ‘need’ one. it never works. good insight.

I just think the whole nickname thing is a bit 1980’s WWF-ish. I personally think that there are very few professional pool players who need nicknames. 95% of my posts are fairly obnoxious, but for the most part its all in good fun. After all, all of the people I write about would tear me up on the pool table. Thanks for the follow up comment and feel free to check out the rest of the site (although you’ll probably want to ignore the Anna K. posts as they’re not very nice).

Re: Earl “The Pearl” Strickland - I met Earl at the BCA trade show in Vegas in 1994. As I was getting an autographed photo, I asked him how he came by the nickname. He said it came from Earl “The Pearl” Munroe, an NBA player from the ’60s/70s era. Hope this explains at least one of the mysteries!
