For those who haven’t noticed or read the BCA member update, the BCA will be hittin’ the Big Easy this weekend for the NBA All Star Game. They’ll be hangin’ with Zo and Magic at the Boost Mobile Celebrity Pool Tournament, then heading over to chill with Shaq and Reggie Bush for the Big Easy Billiards Bash.
This is extremely significant from a pool perspective, as both parties are expected to have some big hitter celebs, which means paparazzi, which means mainstream coverage. For me, the whole purpose of the BCA is to find a way to make pool “hip” and “cool” for the mainstream, since that will ultimately build interest, which will then help pool halls and billiards stores stay in business. It is expected that ESPN will be covering both events as well at BET and Oxygen. Hopefully we’ll see a few shots in magazines like Us Weekly, Entertainment Weekly and Star magazine as well.
According to the press release, the BCA will be promoting their new GenerationPool.com website as well. Last I checked, the site was still “coming soon”, but hopefully it will be something that will attract a mainstream audience and get people excited about playing pool. If any of you doubt the importance of the mainstream, all you have to do is look at the World Series of Poker. When the mainstream picked up on that “sport”, the poker industry went through the roof.
